After a nostalgia fix? This classic PlayStation game is remastered for PS5

PlayStation is giving a modern remaster to the well-loved classic PS1 game Tomba. 

The game originally launched all the way back in 1997 – a fact that is almost guaranteed to make you feel old. It was followed by a sequel, Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return, in 1999. 

Toomba later became a cult classic and earned itself an army of loyal fans. So much so, that in 2011 the original game was re-released on the PlayStation Network.

Now the game is being remastered for PS5, Switch and PC by Limited Run Games.

How much will the PlayStation 5 version cost?

The special edition game is set to be released in August of this year and has a price tag of just $34.99.

Sharing some details on the soon-to-be-released special edition, Limited Run Games branded it the ‘ultimate version’ of the popular game.  

“Tomba! returns in Tomba! Special Edition, the ultimate version of the legendary platforming masterpiece,” the company said on its website. 

“As the titular Tomba, you leap, bite, and throw your way across stunning 2.5D landscapes on a quest to overcome a deplorable cadre of nefarious pigs. 

“Along the way, you’ll explore ancient relics, discover fascinating characters, unlock thrilling quests, and unearth hidden treasures. It’s a platforming adventure that perfectly fuses linear and nonlinear gameplay styles.”

What’s new for the remastered version?

It also detailed some new features that would be coming to the remaster, including the ability to save anywhere – rather than having to find a checkpoint. There’s also a ‘rewind’ feature for when you find yourself stuck in a tricky spot; and a simple toggle for analog control. 

Not only that but it comes with a ‘museum crammed with classic print advertisements, original packaging, and manuals, never-before-seen dev documents, and high-res original artwork’. Alongside this, there’s a remastered soundtrack and an exclusive interview with Tomba creator Tokuro Fujiwara.

So when they said ‘special edition’ they did mean special.

Pre-orders for physical copies open on July 19 – but they are strictly limited – so don’t hang around if you want your nostalgia fix. 

And, with the remastered original set to release in the next few weeks, Limited Run Games and Fujiwara have announced the sequel will also be getting a remaster and will be released next year at some point. Happy days. 

Meanwhile, we may be closer to the release of a PS6 than we think, with the PS5 appearing to enter the final third of its lifecycle earlier this year.
