McLaren 720S helped the brand break into the supercar world

The McLaren 720S plays a much bigger role in the brand’s history than we think.

That’s not just because of the looks.

The 720S is definitely a looker, but this particular model is even more striking and aggressive, chiefly due to the TopCar Design Fury body kit with matching black wheels.

The 720S marked the beginning of a new era for McLaren.

The British marque spent the last 10+ years perfecting its supercars, and the 720S played a key part in this journey.

McLaren 720S – The first ‘true’ McLaren supercar in years

We now take it for granted but, for a very long time, McLaren only made supercars with Mercedes.

In 2011, the British automaker unveiled the 12C – it was called the MP4-12C back then – which was the first ever production car developed entirely by McLaren.

The 12C was then replaced by the 650S, which was in turn succeeded by two ‘families’ of cars: the 540/570S, which were marketed as ‘sports cars’, and the 720S, which was marketed as a supercar.

The 720S, along with its little brother, the 570S, established the paradigm that McLaren still follows today.

The name that tells you all you need to know

The 720S is a modern-day supercar but it was still conceived in an era when automakers would name their cars for their technical specs.

Just like the number ‘458’ in the Ferrari 458 tells you the cubic capacity (4.5) and the number of cylinders (8), 720 is the number of horses that live under the hood of this McLaren.

This is because the 720S is powered by a 4.0 liter, twin-turbocharged V8 engine, sending 720 PS (710 hp) to the rear wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automated transmission.

A McLaren 720S like no other

The engine is unmodified, but everything was, making this car unique.

This 720S is adorned with a TopCar Design Fury Edition body kit, which comprises 50 separate components.

Among other things, we’ve got a multi-piece spoiler lip, a new front panel and rear diffuser, a custom engine cover, and a new rear wing.

The two-tone exterior is complemented by a matching interior with grey Alcantara upholstery, with orange seat belts to give it a splash of color.

There’s no reserve for this car

The car you see here is actually Supercar Blondie’s Alex Hirschi personal car.

It has only been used on the road and never on a racetrack and comes with 7,090 kilometers (about 4,405 mi) on the clock.

The auction ends on July 2nd, and the car is being offered with no reserve.
