It’s always fun stumbling across something weird and wonderful on Facebook Marketplace.

Take this extraordinarily rare Ford Python for example.

It’s believed to be one of just 12 in existence – and it’s currently up for sale for $45,000.

Just in case you don’t know what the Ford Python is, we’ll bring you up-to-speed.

In the mid-1960s, Ford and Carroll Shelby began thinking about an eventual successor to the AC Cobra.

A couple of prototypes were built, but when Ford and Shelby parted company, those plans would be shelved for nearly 20 years.

But the concept would re-emerge in the 1980s and eventually would result in as many as 12 cars in total, named initially after Alvin Kelly who restarted the effort.

The Ford Python was built on a reinforced Mustang frame with a shortened wheelbase to achieve a 55:45 weight ratio.

Because the plan was to sell these vehicles through Ford dealers, they came equipped with standard Mustang equipment and some options that may have been unique to the Python.

Unfortunately, Kelly’s company would run into financial trouble, and the output of the cars stopped at 12, so these autos were considered prototypes.

This Marketplace listing is for one of those cars and it’s available in Colorado Springs – sold with a clean Colorado title.

According to the ad, the seller acquired the car off the original owner 15 years ago.

The seller mentions that since purchasing the car it has driven less than 1,000 miles a year, and it currently has 37,000 miles (approximately 59,500 km) on the clock.

The original owner apparently purchased the 1991 Ford Python from O’Mera Ford in Denver and it’s been a Colorado car ever since.

The Ford Python is an unusual looking thing – a mashup of a Ford Mustang and a Chevrolet Corvette.

The front fascia is pointed, with a sharp bumper which incorporates the turn signals, and it’s got pop-up headlights, too.

As well as being a convertible, it’s sat on a distinctive set of chrome wire wheels.

Ford Python price

As mentioned, the Ford Python is currently for sale on facebook Marketplace for $45,000.

That’s a pretty good price considering another example popped up on Craigslist last year for $160,000.
