A $2 billion submarine breaching through ice is truly a sight to behold, and in this video you can see exactly what we mean – this is the USS Hartford.
In this short clip, you can see the USS Hartford submarine cracking straight through the ice of the Arctic like it isn’t even there, rising to the surface and causing the ground to shake.
The submarine is a seriously impressive – and expensive – bit of kit, weighing in at around 16,500 tons and measuring 110 metres long
A Los Angeles class submarine, the Hartford was launched in 1993 and commissioned in 1994.
It was ground – and ice-breaking – for its time, like this supersonic submarine the US Navy is currently developing.
On board, the craft can take 12 officers and 98 men, and it boasts a full set of torpedo tubes, as well as 12 vertical launch Tomahawk missiles.
The USS Hartford is named after the city of the same name in Connecticut, and remains in active service to this day.
