Boom’s supersonic plane set to break sound barrier as early as this year

US-based Boom Supersonic is on track to make the successor to the immensely popular Concorde supersonic plane — the Overture — a reality as soon as possible, and the company gave the audience at the Farnborough Air Show in the UK a sneak peek of how far its development has come.

It’s been more than two decades since supersonic commercial aircraft were put to rest, which was for a number of reasons including cost, safety, and noise concerns, but a comeback is well overdue.

Now, the company wants to revive supersonic passenger flights, and it is seriously confident with its new technology.

XB-1 supersonic plane will take off for the second time

For context, Boom got the necessary approvals to test its XB-1 supersonic aircraft, which will help in the development of its eventual goal — the Overture commercial airliner.

The XB-1 took to the skies for the first time earlier this year, and it will likely take part in a second series of tests as early as this year.

As a matter of fact, the company wants the aircraft to take off before August 2024.

This aircraft can reach speeds up to Mach 1.7 and carry somewhere between 64 to 80 passengers.

Although that’s still below the decades-old Concorde’s maximum speed, it’s still twice as fast as most commercial airplanes from Boeing and Airbus that we have today.

To explain that better, a London to New York flight aboard the XB-1 or the Overture would take less than three hours.

This new tech certainly seems promising, but the Overture supersonic plane is still a few years away.

The Boom Overture will bring a new era of supersonic flights

Boom’s founder and CEO, Blake Scholl, said that the Overture aircraft would offer its passengers up to 75% less cost of travel compared to Concorde.

This news obviously seems exciting because it might just introduce a new era of commercial planes.

Airlines are also excited about getting their hands on one of these, so we might soon travel in a Boom supersonic plane.

The company will build the planes in its newly launched supersonic airline factory, which will produce 33 aircraft every year.

“We’ve announced over 130 aircraft on order and pre-order with some of the world’s best airlines like United, American and Japan Airlines. But we’re just getting started,” Scholl said.

It even got the attention of Elon Musk, who is also rooting for Boom Supersonic to succeed.

As for us, we’ll just have to wait and see.
