Elon Musk announces Tesla will begin production of humanoid robots next year

Tesla boss Elon Musk seems determined with regard to the timeline of deploying humanoid robots at the company.

He reiterated that it will begin production and start using the Tesla Optimus Gen 2 for itself as early as next year.

However, it will take another year for Musk’s company to provide other companies with these robots since the company will first integrate the new robotic workforce to see how it plays out.

Musk shared the details of a new and comprehensive timeline ahead of this week’s earnings call.

Tesla Optimus Gen 2 to roll out in 2025

It’s certainly not the first time Musk has laid out a plan to deploy Optimus ‘completely,’ but we do know that two humanoid robots are already working in a factory.

“Tesla will have genuinely useful humanoid robots in low production for Tesla internal use next year and, hopefully, high production for other companies in 2026,” he said in a post on X.

And by ‘low production,’ he meant at least over a thousand — or potentially a few thousand — because that’s the number he came up with in June 2024.

If that doesn’t seem enough, he also came up with another unusual metric.

Elon Musk speculates we will soon have around 20 billion humanoid robots working across several companies and homes.

Where did this number come from, you ask?

Well, that’s in line with everyone in the world needing more than two robots for themselves and a mix of industrial use.

How soon will everyone have these humanoid robots?

If anything, it’s ambitious — and you might want to take this information with a grain of salt.

The robots, however, are quite capable and are already performing useful yet menial tasks.

Moreover, the company wants to make ‘one final revision’ before it proceeds with all-out production.

That likely explains adding more capabilities to the Optimus Gen 2, so it can babysit your kids like Musk wanted.

At this point, the timeline is still far from solid and might change depending on how the company handles production.
