In October 2021, Gulfstream announced it would develop the G800, a business jet set to lead the private jet category.
It would be the fastest, have the longest range, and be the most fuel-efficient private jet out there.
Performance specifications indicated it would reach a maximum range of 8,000 Nautical miles, cruising at Mach 0.85.
The future of Gulfstream has arrived
Private jet owners often want their aircraft to operate at maximum cruise speeds on long flights.
For the G800, this would be Mach 0.95.
But doing this would reduce the aircraft’s range by 12.5% to 7,000NM.
The G800’s competitors, the Bombardier Global 7500 and the Dassault Falcon 8X, are close in terms of maximum cruise speed, but they are exceeded in range.
This is down to the refinements Gulfstream engineers made to the airfoils.
Oh, and the advanced Rolls-Royce 700 Pearl engines, each developing 18,250lbs of thrust.
The Pearl engine is a variant of the Rolls-Royce BR725 that powers the Gulfstream G650.
Main difference is that the Pearl is 18% more fuel-efficient.
How does the G800 compare to other private jets?
Compared to other private jets, the G800 is ahead of the pack.
It’s among the fastest and most luxurious, carrying up to 19 passengers at most, with 10 recommended for the longest flights.
The cabin has four separate passenger compartments, which can be adjusted to allow for seating, dining, and sleeping.
Besides the Gulfstream G700 and G800, only a few private planes come close in terms of speed and range.
The Bombardier Global 7500 can reach a maximum of 7,700 nautical miles at a top speed of Mach 0.925.
By comparison, the Dassault Falcon 8X has a top speed of Mach 0.90 and tops out at 6,450 nautical miles.
The Boeing 737 MAX BBJ, admittedly much bigger than the G800, has a Mach 0.85 cruising speed and 7,000 nautical mile range.
Whilst the BBJ costs $100 million to purchase, the G800 is compartively cheaper between $65-$70 million.
Not only it is top of the league, the G800 is sustainable.
Thanks to the Sustainable Aviation Fuel, it has the potential to reduce net carbon emissions by up to 80%.
