The latest V8-powered BMW Art Car will take part in Le Mans

We all know how much BMW loves experimenting with new designs, and the latest BMW Art Car featuring a new artist will race at the upcoming Le Mans.

The German automaker’s 20th Art Car is special because a new artist worked on it this time.

Popular Ethiopian-American artist Julie Mehretu designed the esteemed art project, and it looks wonderful.

The vehicle chosen as a canvas for the 20th BMW Art Car is a BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance race car.

And as it should, the race car will also wear the number 20 livery in the upcoming races.

The livery holds extreme significance — it’s based on the artist’s popular artwork called Everywhen (2021-2023).

BMW is one of the most prominent faces when it comes to complementing the world of art with cars, and the results are usually interesting.

For instance, the fairly recent Skytop concept car unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza event is a spectacle.

Mehretu started with the idea of transforming the #20 M Hybrid V8 and bringing it to life.

It started off as a way to pay tribute to the earlier BMW Art Car artists, and her choice of canvas just happened to be there.

“I kept thinking about this picture in my studio that I had just finished. The model of the new BMW Art Car was standing next to it, and the thought occurred to me: what if we tried to move the car through the painting,” Mehretu mentioned in a statement.

She added, “What might the painting look like if the car were to drive through the work and be influenced by it – as if through a kind of portal?”

When she was done with the design, the automaker and Mehretu used 3D mapping to bring out the new design onto the M Hybrid using a wrap.

It looks quite iconic, to say the least.

And now, the work of art will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

So, who will get to drive it?

BMW M Motorsport drivers Sheldon van der Linde, Robin Frijns, and René Rast will take the Art Car’s reins during the races.

If anything, it will be interesting to see how the Le Mans turns out.
