Are you an avid iPad user but never thought you’d need the Pencil? Here are five reasons why you should probably make the leap.

I’ve personally been using a 12.9-inch iPad Pro accompanied by an iPad Pencil for the best part of six months now and have found it to increase workflow as well as boost creativity.

Not only is it useful for scrolling through pages and selecting the small details, but it wildly expands capabilities on the device.

It’s great for scrawling up notes, fast

If you’re someone who types up notes and emails whether it’s for university or work, you’ll know how much of a gruelling task it can be. This is where an Apple Pencil comes in handy because it means you can actually write them down and then they are all in one place instead of spread across several scrappy notepads.

The Apple Pencil works seamlessly with the in-built Notes app and makes jotting things down that much easier. It even works on other note-taking apps like Microsoft Word, Notability, Gootnotes5, and pretty much everything else.

You can edit photos more precisely

Introducing the Apple Pencil is a must whether you’re an advanced photo editor or just want to have some fun with it. The pencil makes the process easy and gives you an incredible degree of accuracy. If you’re a newby and want to give it a go, the two main platforms are Photoshop and Lightroom as they are often looked at as the ‘industry standard’.

You can colour in like the child you still are

If you jumped on the colouring in faze like me, or just want to get back your creativity, then the Apple Pencil is the key. Just like note-taking, it works seamlessly on the various colouring and art apps available including Procreate, Photoshop, Inspire Pro, Adobe Fresco, Affinity, and so on.

Another fancy tip is that the Apple Pencil will colour in at a darker shade if you press harder on the screen – just like a real pencil!

It’s great for quick marking-up, and various other online graffitiing

If you’ve been sent a PDF document that needs a quick turnaround then the Apple Pencil will make the process much quicker. For signing, editing and amending, the pencil is really useful. As we all know, sometimes our fat fingers can’t quite get to the small details of a contract.

The Apple Pencil makes editing that much easier because its precise nib that makes contact with the screen can pinpoint exactly where you want to edit on the page. It makes life so much easier and is much more intuitive than using a mouse and keyboard.

It makes browsing far more seamless

If you’re someone who uses their iPad to browse the web, then the pencil is ideal because it makes the whole experience seamless. Scrolling with your finger will never be as smooth as with a stylus because of grease and other frictional muck that lives on your fingers. But with an Apple Pencil, all this goes away. It also helps your screen stay clean.

Not all generations are compatible with the Pencil, however. This is a list of all the iPads that offer Apple Pencil support:

Apple Pencil first-gen support:
