If we told you that a particular country was selling off its Bitcoin reserves and had made over $42 million in 2026 alone, would Bhutan be your guess? Well, as it turns out, that’s exactly what it’s doing.

The tiny Himalayan kingdom has been quietly offloading parts of its huge crypto stash throughout the year.

Recent data suggests another 175 Bitcoins were moved this week alone, worth roughly $11.85 million.

As a result, Bhutan’s total Bitcoin holdings have now dropped to below 5,400 BTC after once sitting at around 13,000.

Bhutan is rapidly selling its Bitcoin as its giant crypto stash shrinks

Bhutan became one of the most unexpected players in the crypto world after building up a massive Bitcoin reserve through government-backed mining.

Instead of buying coins like many investors, the country used its abundant hydroelectric power to generate Bitcoin itself.

That meant Bhutan suddenly ended up holding hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency.

But things now appear to be changing.

Over the past few months, observers have noticed a steady stream of Bitcoin being moved out of wallets linked to the Bhutanese government.

The latest transfers suggest the country has been gradually selling parts of its reserve rather than keeping the entire stockpile.

Even after the sales, Bhutan still owns a significant amount of BTC, however, the size of its crypto holdings is now far smaller than when the reserve was at its peak.

$42,500,000 worth of BTC sold

For most countries, selling tens of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency would barely make headlines.

But Bhutan is a small mountain kingdom better known for stunning monasteries and its unique focus on Gross National Happiness than for huge financial moves.

That is why its Bitcoin strategy has fascinated people in the tech and crypto world.

The idea that a remote Himalayan nation quietly built one of the world’s largest government Bitcoin holdings already surprised many observers.

Now, with more than $42.5 million worth of the cryptocurrency reportedly sold in 2026 alone, Bhutan’s crypto experiment appears to be entering a new phase.

Instead of simply mining and holding digital coins, the country now seems to be cashing in on part of its unexpected tech fortune.
