#RIPTwitter is trending as hundreds of employees walk off the job

Elon Musk is set to lose up to 75 percent of Twitter’s workforce and everyone is laughing at him on social media.

The new Twitter CEO sent an email to his staff this week telling them they either needed to get ‘hardcore’ with their work or leave.

And it appears his email didn’t have the desired effect.

In the email, Musk reportedly told his remaining 3,700 employees they needed to sign a pledge by 5pm on Thursday if they wanted to keep their jobs.

The pledge stated a willingness to work ‘long hours at high intensity’ or be laid off with three months of severance pay.

“Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore,” he wrote.

“This will mean long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”

Instead of signing the pledge, a reported 75 percent of workers at the San Francisco headquarters ignored the email and hundreds walked out.

RIPTwitter memes

Amid the mass resignation, the Twitter hashtag RIPTwitter was born and is now flooding the platform.

And while it’s not great for Elon Musk, the RIPTwitter memes are great entertainment for the rest of us.

One user posted a meme depicting a gravestone for Twitter, reading “killed by Elon Musk”.

Another compared the downfall of Twitter to the sinking of the Titanic.

Meanwhile, Musk is pretending everything is fine.

“We just hit another all-time high in Twitter usage lol,” he said.

“How do you make a small fortune in social media? Start out with a large one,” he said, appearing to reference the $44 billion sum he paid for Twitter.

The Tesla CEO has been making light of the situation since the moment he bought the social media platform.

On his first day, the billionaire actually carried a sink into the headquarters to ‘let it sink in’ that he was the new boss.

That’s now backfired, with one user posting a meme that said “lol you get it guys? I’m going to sink the company”.

Musk also posted his own meme, appearing to argue Twitter users would bury the platform themselves.

He also tweeted that he was in good spirits about the future of the company.

“The best people are staying, so I’m not super worried,” he said.
