China’s BYD is reportedly building a megafactory so big that it would outsize San Francisco.

BYD has been increasingly touted as competition for Tesla, and this latest development shows it doesn’t intend on slowing down.

But after surpassing Tesla in revenue last year, where was left to go?

Building a factory the size of a West Coast city seemed like a sound plan.

BYD are apparently building a megafactory bigger than San Francisco

In the world of EVs, there is a lot of competition.

Most brands are putting out their own takes on the environmentally friendly car, whether it’s Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, or Porsche.

But if there were two manufacturers that we would choose as the top dogs, it would have to be Tesla and BYD.

Now, Tesla is synonymous with EVs, so it’s hard to imagine another brand taking the top spot.

But BYD is sure putting a lot of effort into dethroning its American rival.

A video has been shared online which reportedly showed drone footage of a vast EV mega factory currently being built.

This BYD facility is based in Zhengzhou, within China’s Henan Province.

Not only is this is a huge building, but it comes with high rise blocks, a football pitch, and tennis courts.

Oh yeah, and they’re all separated by roads.

We can’t quite figure out if this is more a factory with a city attached to it, or a city with a factory attached to it.

At any rate, the scale of it is breathtaking.

When will this mega-factory be completed?

You know a project is a big undertaking when its been split up into eight phases of growth.

The building process is currently somewhere between phase five and eight, as reported by The Sun.

When completed, the property is expected to take up 50 square miles of land.

That’s 10 times bigger than Tesla’s Gigafactory out in Nevada, and roughly the same size as San Francisco.

Of BYD’s 90,000 workers, 60,000 of them are reportedly stationed on this land.

At the Zhengzhou facility, BYD is aiming to produce one million cars a year.

This would cover approximately a quarter of all the cars they sold in 2024, which netted them a revenue of $107 billion.

Should Tesla be worried?

Comparisons between the two brands have been made, with Tesla coming out favorably in terms of efficiency and affordability.

So the American company may still have time to retain its crown.

But with a huge megafactory on the way, it can’t afford to rest easy.
