Almost everyone who drives around a lot relies on Google Maps, but the tech giant never dropped a utility feature for iPhone and Apple CarPlay users that folks with Android and Android Auto had for years — until now.

It’s a speedometer and speed limit indicator, and while it may seem like a minor inconvenience, it’s actually a pretty useful tool to have.

Since the tech giant never gave Apple users the chance to use it, some even flocked to Waze, which is also owned by Google.

iPhone and CarPlay get new speed features on Google Maps

The speedometer and speed limit indicator feature does precisely what it sounds like — it shows you your current speed.

And if you’re on a road with a speed limit, it also tells you to slow down so you don’t end up with a ticket.

As it should, Google Maps knows all the speed limits on different roads, so you can drive without checking for a sign every time.

Since everyone uses Maps, manufacturers like Ferrari are getting rid of their proprietary navigation systems because nobody uses them.

If you look at it from a convenience perspective, the new Maps feature is certainly something everyone would want and use.

However, only Android smartphones and cars with Android Auto had the privilege to use it when it first rolled out in 2019.

But why did Apple users have to wait so long? Nobody can say for sure — but it could be the usual Android vs. iOS favoritism.

The new feature is rolling out globally

Case in point, Google leveled the playing field now, and if you have an iPhone or Apple CarPlay on your car, you should be seeing the highly requested feature in the near future.

Some users reportedly received it only recently, but it still might take a while for everyone to get it.

Why is that, you ask?

It’s because getting something new isn’t as easy as updating your app when it comes to a user base as big as Google Maps — at least when it comes to Google.

In tech terms, it’s called an A/B rollout — where select groups based on their devices and locations receive a new feature earlier than others do.

Despite these technicalities, Google confirmed to TechCrunch that all iPhone and CarPlay users globally will eventually get the speedometer and speed limit functionality.

It’s certainly a handy tool, but you should always rely on your car’s actual speedometer to confirm your current speed, as Maps uses GPS data to calculate your car’s ‘estimated’ speed.

Don’t blame them if you get a ticket, basically – stay safe on the roads.
