Once upon a time there was a six-wheeled Italian supercar you’ve probably never heard of

This is the Covini C6W, a six-wheeled supercar from Italy.

Unveiled as a production model, not just a prototype, this weird supercar never really caught on.

We can totally see why.

This supercar is surprisingly compact

Sometimes, automakers unveil cars that feel like an answer to a question no one asking.

The Covini C6W certainly belongs to that category.

Unveiled in 2004 as a V8-powered sports car, the C6W had two doors and two seats, but for some reason it had six wheels.

Not only was this unnecessary, it was also very complicated to design, partly because the Covini is a short car, just 164 inches (4.18meters), and also because it uses a 4.2-liter Audi V8.

The engine in question, which Audi used across different models through the years, definitely doesn’t require six wheels to function.

In short, adding two extra wheels made the car look weird, but it also made it potentially worse.

In theory, the C6X remained in production for eight years, with around six units built in Italy each year.

In practice, that sounds a bit far-fetched, and it’s unclear how many were actually made.

To this day, the Covini C6W remains one of the few production six-wheeled sports car in the world, and probably the only one people (sometimes) remember along with the Panther.

We wonder why.

What other six-wheeled cars can you buy?

Cars with six wheels are almost always aftermarket products and not production models.

The first (and craziest) that springs to mind is the Rolls-Royce Phantom with six wheels that Supercar Blondie once tested.

There are exceptions, though.

In 2013, Mercedes-AMG unveiled the G63 6X6, a production version of the G-Wagen with six wheels.

Around 100 units were built.
