Pilot captures super rare ‘gigantic jet’ phenomenon during night flight

A pilot managed to capture an incredibly rare and beautiful natural phenomenon known as a ‘gigantic jet’ whilst flying his aircraft over the ocean.

Even if you’re not interested in flying planes, you’d have to admit that there’s something compelling about cruising around the skies during the darkness of night.

There’s something peaceful and majestic about it, sitting above the clouds and watching the skies.

But, as well as being beautiful, you also might capture something interesting too.

Some pilots have reported seeing what they believe to be alien spacecraft, and others have spotted rare natural phenomenon, which is what we’re dealing with here.

Pilot Alexander Torres is known for sharing his flying experiences on Instagram, where he has 13,400 followers on his @airbus.fr account.

A few weeks back, he shared a remarkable video from an overnight flight, describing it as ‘straight out of a sci-fi movie’.

As the plane cruises through the skies, suddenly a flash illuminates the night sky around it, glowing red and blue momentarily then dying off.

It’s pretty awe-inspiring, and – it turns out – he’s been very lucky to witness it.

Alexander shared: “Encountered a cosmic marvel!

“Captured the surreal beauty of a gigantic jet phenomenon during my night flight, a sight that feels straight out of a sci-fi movie!”

A ‘gigantic jet’ is a form of lightning that occurs in the upper reaches of the earth’s atmosphere, sometimes known as a sprite.

There are a few types of lightning such as this, including ‘blue jets’, ‘blue starters’, as well as other phenomena known as ‘elves’, ‘trolls’, ‘pixies’, ‘ghosts’, and ‘gnomes’.

The general consensus online seems to be that this lightning is either a gigantic jet or a blue jet.

Gigantic jets are not only beautiful, but they’re also fascinating as well.

Whilst most lightning shoots around in the clouds and at lower levels of the atmosphere, striking the ground in many cases, this type of lightning shoots from the top of a cloud and seems to head straight out into space.

That just adds to the ethereal quality of it.

Gigantic jets have a mysterious quality to them, as scientists still aren’t completely sure where they come from.

Mostly it’s due to the fact that they are so infrequently observed, which brings home how remarkable this footage from the plane is.

In the comments, people were suitably impressed.
