A United Airlines flight had to turn back after two hours because a pilot onboard had forgotten their passport.
It’s not unheard of for passengers to get to check in and realize they’ve left their passport at home, but it’s more unusual for the pilot who is in charge of the aircraft
The pilot of flight UA198 had to turn the aircraft around after having realized their mistake, adding even more journey time to the 13-hour flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai.
A rather coy radio message was relayed into the cabin to try and mask what exactly the issue was.

The delay caused considerable disruption for passengers
The aircraft had already been airborne for two hours before the crew realized there was a passport missing.
Users on Reddit recounted the incident, some even suggesting the airplane had been airborne for up to three hours.
One Redditor said the message said: “UA198 SFO-PVG: Your flight diverted to San Francisco due to an unexpected crew-related issue requiring a new crew.”
United had already arranged for a new crew to board the jet and take it back to Shanghai.

The original crew said: “Once they arrive, we’ll get you back on your way to Shanghai as soon as possible. We sincerely apologize for this disruption and appreciate your patience.”
Passengers suffered a huge delay with the United Airlines flight
Passengers naturally wanted compensation for the issue when they arrived back in California.
The switch to a new crew was not quick.
The aircraft had to taxi back in and go through all the pre-flight procedures again.
Despite the error, United didn’t offer much in the way of compensation.
Another user on Reddit said passengers only got a $15 meal voucher for the inconvenience caused.

United itself issued a statement: “On Saturday, United flight 198 from Los Angeles to Shanghai landed at San Francisco International Airport as the pilot did not have their passport onboard.”
Incredibly, this is the second time that a United Airlines pilot has forgotten their passport.
The flight did eventually make its way safely to Shanghai after the unscheduled turnaround.
