Yas is a massive superyacht that’s 463 feet long – or 141 meters.

For reference, that’s the same as putting one and a half football fields one after the other, lengthwise.

Even with that in mind, nothing prepares you for the sheer size of the yacht once you see it in person.

The thing with these yachts is that figures and measurements on paper are always a little cold and vague, and they don’t really paint the whole picture.

This is why people are always shocked when they actually get to see one of these massive yachts in person and realize it takes 10 minutes just to stroll from one end to the other.

That’s what happened when Mark Zuckerberg moored his massive yacht, Launchpad, at the relatively small dock of Castellammare di Stabia in Italy.

It is also the effect that this ship had when it docked in the Spanish port of Malaga, where these pictures were taken.

Yas used to be a Navy boat

Just like the Christina O, Yas started out in life as a navy frigate.

First launched in 1978, Yas used to be called the HLNMS Piet Hein, a Royal Netherlands Navy frigate.

In 1998, the Royal Netherlands Navy decided the Piet Hein had served her purpose and had earned the right to retire.

The boat was decommissioned and sold to the government of the United Arab Emirates, which decided to have her rebuilt and transformed into a massive superyacht.

They named her after Yas Island, where the F1 Grand Prix also takes place.

One of the largest motor yachts in the world

When it was first rebuilt and relaunched, Yas was one of the world’s largest motor yachts.

Unsurprisingly, most other yachts on the list were also owned by some members of the Emirati Royal family.

Things aren’t that different today.

The world’s largest privately owned yacht is Azzam, which is also owned by the UAE.

Yas has eye-watering running costs

It’s difficult to establish the value of a boat such as this one, but the bottom line is, if you wanted to have something similar built for you today, you’d be looking at a $200 million price tag.

More importantly, you’d be looking at a yearly tab of around $20 million, which is what Yas costs in maintenance, crew, taxes, and so on.

Yas can accommodate up to 60 guests in 30 suites and 56 crew.

Unlike most yachts of this size, Yas is not available for charter.

So, when it comes to securing a 100+ meter boat for the summer, the ultra-millionaires of the world will have to look elsewhere.
