The controversial double-level commercial aircraft seating may yet become a reality thanks to a partnership with Airbus.

The double-level airplane was revived after aviation start-up Chaise Longue announced that it was pursuing the idea more seriously in partnership with the European company.

First revealed in 2023, the idea had a lukewarm reception, and many thought it had been quietly dropped.

However, there is now a very real chance of it actually happening.

Airbus, however, has yet to make serious comments on the concept.

Airbus is being very cagey about the concept

Airbus has acknowledged that the idea is under consideration.

However, the airplane giant is keeping its cards close to its chest.

Speaking to CNN Travel, Airbus said: “Chaise Longue is exploring some early-stage concepts with Airbus on two-level seating solutions for Airbus commercial aircraft.”

Following that, however, Airbus further commented: “Given the nature of this early phase level, we prefer not to further comment at this stage.”

The concept involves removing the overhead cabin and allowing two levels of seats in a single cabin.

Travelers would then have the option of booking either the top or the bottom row.

Those in the bottom row would also have extra legroom, allowing them to stretch out a bit more.

The double-level seating arrangement has pros and cons

The seating arrangement has advantages and disadvantages.

CNN tested it and found that those on the lower level could suffer from claustrophobia.

However, the extra legroom they now had could cancel that out and allow for a more comfortable trip.

As you might expect, with such an unusual design, it has had mixed reactions online.

Many have been cynical, suggesting it is just another way to cram more people onto aircraft.

The concept’s designer, Núñez Vicente, hopes it could provide an additional revenue stream for airlines.

Plus, he envisions that in the future, the new double-level design will be in the center.

Two rows of traditional seating will then flank the center row.

For now, though, the design remains a concept, and it is unlikely to appear on any airliner anytime soon.
