A new document recently published by Ford reveals bold plans that will completely elevate the experience of driving their EVs.
The document is a patent for a “Shifter Assembly for Electric Vehicle” which essentially mimics the feeling of a manual transmission in a EV that doesn’t have one.
This new stick shift, like a traditional gearbox, moves in an H pattern on an up/down track and affects the vehicle’s speed.
We guess this is good for people who have bought an EV, but miss using a stick shift transmission.

An interesting development for drivers of Ford EVs
Classic American automaker Ford seems to do everything to ensure its drivers have the most authentic and comfortable driving experience possible.
And that includes their EVs.
Those Ford drivers who decided to make the switch from gas to EV, might be missing the feeling of driving a manual car, with a bit of pure classic American muscle.
The new 17-page patent from the American automaker has revealed a bold decision that will definitely help those drivers.
The blue oval will add what the document calls a “Shifter Assembly for Electric Vehicle” to its electric cars going forward.
This seems like an interesting move, because, well, EVs don’t need a manual transmission. But clearly enough of Ford’s EV drivers miss the feeling of one, otherwise this patent wouldn’t exist.

Finally, a gearbox for my EV!
The document reveals how the use of haptics is going to elevate the driving experience using the shifter.
A lot of people don’t realize how much we rely on haptics for everyday life.
When it comes to the feeling of your phone buzzing in your hand, or hearing a comforting click when you know something is fitted properly – that’s haptics.
The Ford Shifter is going to have the distinctive click and smooth glide of the transmission in the non-EVs.
But instead of shifting gears, it will be linked to the car’s speed system in an H-grid. So, it’s not just a gear stick for the sake of having a gear stick. In other words, it’ll actually have a purpose.
It seems like the automaker is trying to emulate the experience of driving a classic Ford in its EVs, and this is only the start.
With huge leaps being made in EV development and maintenance, this tiny change will create even less of a divide between EVs and gas vehicles.
Which is really important as a lot of companies are going for carbon neutrality for the sake of the environment.
This new shifter could be the reason someone buys an EV from Ford. Because the only thing that now separates the vehicles is how they’re powered.
