A Canadian company called Nering Industries has come up with an ingenious idea to generate free electricity.

It uses a giant wheel that turns water into energy, and it’s enough to power an entire house.

The project began with what’s known as the ‘Poncelet’ wheel, a giant waterwheel (3 meter diameter) connected to an equally sizeable arm made of iron.

When the wheel is in the water, the river flow keeps it in motion, generating energy in the process.

The wheel can produce up to 7.5 kW of power, enough to feed the generator that keeps the lights on in the house, and it operates at 50 RPM.

Even though the electricity it generates is technically free, you still have to factor in the cost of the wheel and maintenance.

Even so, it sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it?

The video was originally shared by Nering Industries across their social media platforms.

When we shared the video to the Supercar Blondie Facebook channel, people flocked to the comment section to share their impressions.

“Ironically, I once asked an engineer if something similar to this could be outfitted to the outflow from the ground treatment plant. He said no,” one user said.

Others came up with ideas to improve on the wheel design.

“Excellent idea. Water makes belts slippery, chain may be a better option,” one said.

“Something like this would have to be disengaged during high flow [and] would require some kind of monitoring system. Very ingenious though,” said another.

Others were so keen on the idea, they inquired about getting one for themselves.

“How much does it cost to buy and install? Including the connection to the house,” they said.
