Everyone loves an unusual snap up – whether it be a property, car or boat.

Take this guy who purchased an old school bus and completely overhauled it.

But, this unusual, yet very impressive buy may jump to the top of our list.

The mysterious purchase in question was an abandoned navy barge – and let’s just say it carries quite the baggage.

The barge is a mighty 65-years-old

Fancying a new property project, this pair bought the barge in Idaho.

The couple said they’d had eyes on the boat in Idaho for four years – so the purchase was by no means a snap decision.

And, it really is one vast, floating mass.

For starters, it’s made up of a variety of different components – all cleverly welded together.

It used to carry some power too, with the engine originally able to reach a whopping 300-horsepower and even housing a 360-degree rotating propeller meaning it could propel itself- impressive right?

But are you ready for the juiciest aspect of all?

The history of the navy barge is steeped with exciting details of the US navy’s past

The lake the barge sits on has a deep history of mining, logging, and even fishing – quite the combo.

Named Lake Pend Oreille, it is the largest lake in the state.

But below the water, 1,158 feet down, could lie a deep, dark floating secret.. or two.

The land is part of an in-land naval base and has been used for many years to test new submarines, in fact they could still be under the surface – which let’s face it – is a bit eerie.

Now, the history of the barge itself is quite the story – strap in

It was part of ‘acoustic research’ on the lake and with a set up of underwater wire that the navy would send torpedoes and submarines through and monitor the soundwaves.

The barge in fact, housed all the equipment that would do said monitoring – so it was packed with super advanced gadgets.

So what exactly does this couple have in mind for their new barge?

Well, the plan is to transform it into a floating home, but the couple admits they have a lot of work to do.

You can watch a tour of the barge in action below.
