New Bentley Flying Spur Speed has enough range to go from LA to Vegas and back on a tank

This is the new Bentley Flying Spur, the fourth generation of the luxury sedan derived from the Continental.

Like its coupe brother, the Continental GT, the upgraded Flying Spur uses a hybrid V8.

It also shares several design cues with the coupe.

Lucky for us, it also shares the same flagship burnished color as the Continental GT, which is a good thing because it looks tremendous.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

That’s definitely the case with Flying Spur, which explains why Bentley didn’t revolutionize anything; it just improved everything.

Visually, the car shares several design elements with the Continental GT, including the same LED lights at the front and a similar setup at the back.

The key difference is obviously the shape.

But you can tell it’s built on the same VW Group MSB as the Continental GT because, despite having two more doors, it is basically the same size as a Continental GT.

The Continental GT is 4.89 meters (192 inches) long and weighs 2,459kg (5,421 lbs) for reference.

So it’s not exactly a lightweight car, but then again it doesn’t have to be, which brings us on the key difference between this Flying Spur and the old one, the engine.

The new hybrid V8 powering Flying Spur

Bentley replaced the old W12 and the old V8 with a new hybrid V8.

This 4.0-liter V8 has two turbos, and it is paired to an electric motor.

Combined, they produce 782PS (771HP) and 1,000Nm (783lb-ft) of torque.

Like the Continental, it does 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds, and – like the Continental – it has an impressive range.

Bentley says Flying Spur will do up to 800km (500 miles) on a tank, including up to 80km (50 miles) on electric power alone.

That’s nearly enough to drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back on a tank.

The Speed version also features Bentley’s new Performance Active Chassis, all-wheel steering and adjustable suspension.

The old Flying Spur was in a class of its own, and the new is even better.

Apart from the new aero package, and the new 22-inch wheels, there are also a few new things for the interior.

There are still diamond-quilted seats, with a new perforation pattern, new graphics for the instrument cluster. Upon request, buyers can opt for a rotating display that hides behind the wood veneer.

Some people are going to love that.

The car is also equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and compatible with over-the-air updates.

This is the range-topping version, and other variants might be available soon.

For the time being, Bentley is heavily invested in the newly-launched hybrid V8, which is the flagship powertrain for the entire line-up.

At some point, probably in the near future, we expect upgraded V6 versions, too.
