The Rolex in question is a 1940s military pocket watch, which is believed to have been issued to troops during World War Two.
The police have no idea how the watch ended up in Scarborough, a small coastal town located around 240 miles north of London in the UK.
However, Sgt Elaine Malcolm, the police officer who’s actively looking for the owner, said the piece is in excellent condition, and likely to hold great sentimental value to the owner.
These things aren’t unheard of.
A while back, a surfer found a pricey Rolex in the ocean while surfing in Australia.
The Rolex in question had been lost for years, and it was completely covered in sea debris.
Thankfully, the surfer was able to find the rightful owner and give him the watch.
After that, the owner sent the watch back to Rolex for servicing and to have it restored.
And it looks brilliant, as good as new.
The market for pocket watches is nowhere near as vibrant and dynamic as the market for wristwatches.
Probably because, we suspect, collectors generally want watches they can wear, even if they choose not to.
Still, whatever the reason may be, pocket watches are generally less expensive than their equivalent counterparts that are equipped with a strap, bracelet or band.
A similar iteration of this Rolex pocket watch, for example, can be bought pre-owned for just over $2,000.
By contrast, finding a wristwatch that says ‘Rolex’ on the dial for the same price is a bit of a chimera.
