Tesla Model Y cop car in Minnesota praised by Police Chief

More and more police departments are taking on Teslas as cop cars, and the Tesla Model Y has proved to be a success with one in particular.

The Model Y has been part of the police force in La Crescent in Minnesota since last December.

It was the first electric vehicle to be used by the county.

According to the Police Chief Luke Ahlschlager, they’ve proven to be a hit with citizens and officers alike.

Tesla on the beat

As reported by Teslarati, Chief Ahlschlager said: “Public State Aid was used to customize it for the police department. The officers love it and it’s good for the city.”

There are eight staff members in the city’s police department, and they access the car with a phone key.

Each one has an individual profile to use whilst using the car.

Chief Ahlschlager has heaped praise on the car’s performance: “It moves fast. It’s like a souped up golf cart that runs on battery.

“It has regenerative braking, which works without applying pressure to the brakes and helps to extend battery life.”

There’s a charging station in the city, but more would be needed if the whole county followed the route La Crescent had gone down.

An Eco-friendly choice for La Crescent

Jason Ludwigson, the city’s sustainability coordinator, informed the council that they’d been awarded $12,000 in Carbon Reduction Program funds for 2023 and 2024.

A study had found that replacing a cop car with an electric vehicle would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 93%.

He said: “Using the fleet study data, the city made the decision to use the CRP funds to lease a Tesla Model Y.

“The Model Y will be used by the La Crescent Police Department. At the end of the 4-year lease term, the city will own the Tesla Model Y.”

Teslas becoming part of a police fleet is an increasingly common trend, with one company outfitting them for departments across the US.
