An American off road recovery crew were called to a Tesla stranded at 10,000ft in the snowy mountains of Utah, begging the question – how did it get there?

The team had to approach on foot due to the dangerous conditions but were eventually assisted by the use of a bright yellow Bombardier Bombi Snowcat truck.

The crew also had to recover their friend’s Toyota FJ Cruiser which had become stranded while attempting an earlier rescue

After a lot of perseverance, both vehicles were successfully recovered, warning drivers to not attempt driving in snowy conditions without the proper equipment.

High altitude disaster

American YouTuber Matt Wetzel – known online as Matt’s Off Road Recovery – was called to a 10,000ft snowy mountain in Mammoth Creek, Utah, after a Tesla had become stranded in the snow.

Conditions had become increasingly dire as it became nighttime, so Matt’s team not only had to attempt a rescue under the cover of darkness but also in heavy snow.

In addition to the Tesla rescue, they received a phone call from their friend Carl who had broken down in his Toyota FJ Cruiser when he attempted a rescue before, meaning that the team had to recover both vehicles.

It’s hardly the first time a Tesla has become stranded, and the snowy conditions were impossible for it to navigate.

This became clearer when even a larger rescue vehicle built for tougher off-road situations became stranded alongside the Tesla.

The team used their beloved Bombardier Bombi Snowcat truck in the rescue, which they have affectionately named the Yellow Banana.

The caterpillar wheels worked efficiently on the soft snowy surface.

How did it get stranded?

In the video it was revealed that the Tesla managed to drive so far up into the mountains because the snow was frozen and a lot harder earlier on in the day, as the day had gone on, large snowdrifts of freshly fallen snow made the ground too soft to drive on.

As the snowdrifts increased, the Tesla had begun to sink into the snow.

This is seen when the wrong tires for driving conditions are used again and again.

Both vehicles were recovered and everyone involved was safe, but it’s clear that this can be a cautionary tale for those attempting extreme weather conditions in vehicles that aren’t properly equipped for them.
