Geniuses are upgrading their BMW i3s with 200-mile batteries in hopes of creating a ‘forever car’.
With their carbon fiber bodies and aluminum frames, it’s no wonder that the i3s are in good shape.
But their battery packs haven’t held up quite as well, with some offering 50 miles or less of EV range.
Dreams of a replacement battery pack may be becoming a reality, if rumors are to be believed.

BMW i3s with a difference – batteries that are built to last
When it comes to EVs, battery life means a whole lot.
It’s something all drivers want to take into consideration, whether they’re driving a Tesla Model 3, a Model S, or a Cybertruck.
And everybody wants to find a way to increase batteries, like this UK start-up that developed a new battery that could charge in four minutes.

But with regards to the BMW i3, you can expect 150 miles of range at 42.2 kWh.
However, there have been photos coming out of China that may indicate a battery upgrade is on the way.
Numerous sales representatives have shared snaps to social media of i3s allegedly receiving battery upgrades.
This alleged 49 kWh pack has already made it onto Alibaba, where it’s being sold for $6,500.
These are being sold by CVC, but other companies have been advertising them.
One post online touting the new and improved battery pack came from a user called Echi Aiden.

The user said the upgraded package would not only extend range but also increase performance.
“Extended range: Say goodbye to range anxiety and enjoy longer drives,” he said.
“Enhanced performance: Experience smoother and more powerful acceleration.
“Stay Eco-Friendly: Keep the green DNA of your BMW i3 and continue contributing to a sustainable future.”
Is this a legitimate thing or an internet hoax?
On paper, this sounds amazing.

But not everything we see online is true, so we have to ask – is this a legitimate thing or good old fashioned misinformation?

Well, it appears to be the former.
A man in Los Angeles reportedly got his i3 upgraded, and he shared his experience to Reddit.
He sourced the battery from China and got it put in by Maxxpower, a company based in LA.
Michael Boomer, who runs the company, told The Autopian: “It’s so cool to just be able to turn on the AC and not even look and worry and plan…it’s a totally different car now. You approach it completely differently with that kind of range.”
“I can tell you what I’ve seen — real world Los Angeles driving — AC just kinda running in the background on Eco Pro, I’m getting, depending on how I drive, that can be anywhere from high 160s to 200 miles.”

How exciting.
Watch this space – we could be seeing more and more battery upgrades in the near future.
