Police in London, UK, have seized a large haul of supercars worth more than £60m ($7.7m), including cars made by Lamborghini, McLaren, and Rolls-Royce.

Many of the cars were taken away from their owners because of lack of insurance – amongst other offenses – and following complaints from residents about anti-social driving.

A City of Westminster councilor said the area was being treated like a ‘race track,’ with high-performance cars driving around at great speed and creating a lot of noise.

After all, the type of cars we’re talking about here aren’t known for their subtlety.

The $7.7m supercars seized by London police

The supercars seized by the police would make a fine private collection if they were all stored in a nice garage together, instead of being driven in an anti-social manner on public roads.

Instead, they’re now in the possession of the police.

Among the vehicles that Scotland Yard took were cars by McLaren, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and Ferrari.

As you can see, there are some seriously expensive cars here.

But – as is so often the case – the problem wasn’t the cars, but the ‘boy racers’ behind the wheel.

That’s why the police decided to step in, just as they did upon discovering this £1.3 million ‘chop shop’ in nearby Essex.

It’s a good job that they weren’t using these police cars from Greece to try to keep up, though Dubai’s police might have had a chance, given its impressive fleet.

London’s Metropolitan Police crack down on anti-social driving

In conjunction with the supercar seizures, the police made five arrests for offenses such as insurance fraud, using a mobile device behind the wheel, failure to wear a seatbelt, and driving without due care and attention.

It should go without saying that these are all things you should avoid doing.

The first cars were seized by the cops on 2 August, with further operations taking place over that weekend.

The Metropolitan Police said that it had worked in conjunction with Westminster City Council and the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB).

In a statement, the MIB confirmed that the main reason for the cars being taken was insufficient insurance or no insurance.

Spokesperson Martin Saunders added: “Our message is clear: high-value cars are not exempt from insurance requirements.”

Paul Dimoldenberg, the Westminster City Cabinet member for city management, said that the drivers using the local area as ‘their own private race track’ were ‘not welcome’.

He added: “The noise and dangerous driving from these boy racers is often worse during the summer, so I welcome these results from the enforcement work.”

Met Police spokesperson, Special Inspector Geoff Tatman, said: “This hugely successful operation has proved we are dealing with those crimes, such as anti-social driving, that is causing most distress to residents and tourists.

“It’s also testament to the hard work and dedication of the Met Special Constables – volunteer police officers – that play a vital role in our mission to make London safer and kindly give up their free time help serve the community.”

Just remember, if you’re lucky enough to be able to own a high-performance car, it comes with a bit of responsibility as well.
