We all know a few hidden features and different ‘hacks’ when it comes to cars but that knowledge is nothing compared to a professional mechanic – so here are a few common mistakes that even they avoid with their own cars.

Although many of us use cars almost daily and think that we know everything there is to know about our vehicles.

But that doesn’t mean we treat them in the best possible way.

Common mistakes mechanics avoid with their own cars

Don’t use aftermarket car parts

Although aftermarket parts are cheaper than original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts, they can cause a few issues.

Grace Claudio, a New York-based master automotive technician for BMW Manhattan told HuffPost that these parts end up costing you more.

She gave an example of an aftermarket battery.

Since the car can’t register the battery it thinks faulty and will not operate correctly as a result.

“I’ve had it where things come apart, and it makes it worse than it already was. And then it’s more of an expensive repair.” Claudio said.

Don’t overlook regular car maintenance

Avoiding regular car maintenance is one of the most common mistakes new car owners make.

This is mostly due to their lack of knowledge about preventative maintenance and an ‘I will deal with it later’ attitude.

“In reality, preventative maintenance is going to be always less expensive than the repair,” says Bogi Lateiner, a master automotive technician.

Regular car maintenance is especially important if you have an old or a classic car.

Luckily we have a guide on how to maintain and preserve a classic car collection.

Don’t buy used car tires

According to Claudio, buying used tires is another one of the common mistakes that she has seen his clients make.

Even if a used tire looks normal, it can be a hazard due to its age.

Tire manufacturers like Michelin recommend replacing tires 10 years after their date of manufacture.

While some even recommend six years.
