New bridge in China is so massive it broke 10 world records in one go

This bridge in China is a structural marvel and it has the world records to prove it.

10 of them, to be precise.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link was only recently opened but is already making a big impression.

What records has this Chinese bridge broken?

The 49.7km bridge connects two cities on the Pearl River Delta – Shenzhen and Zhongshan.

Finished in June 2024, the project began in May 2017, with an estimated cost of $4.83 billion.

It may have been pricey, but the ambitious bridge has broken 10 world records.

So, here we go.

Longest Combined Bridge-Tunnel System

At 49.7km long, it beats out the other contenders to be the longest combined bridge-tunnel system in the world.

The longest bridge section is 22.5km, whilst one tunnel is 6.7km long.

Largest Over-Water Highway Bridge

Standing 15.5km above the sea, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is also the largest highway bridge to go over a body of water.

Highest Number of Bridge Piers

There are 19 bridges within the structure, each with a pier. These ensure that the bridges are well supported, even in tumultuous weather.

Most Expensive Bridge-Tunnel Project

At $4.83 billion, this is easily the most costly bridge-tunnel project undertaken.

For comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge would cost $610 million to build in 2023.

Fastest Construction Timeline

Taking seven years to finish, this is the world record for the fastest construction time on a project of its size.

Longest Immersed Tunnel

The 6.7km immersed tunnel section of the Link is the longest in the world.

However, how long this will remain the case is in doubt, as a proposed immersed tunnel connecting a Danish and German island is 18 km long.

But given that it’s not due to be completed until 2029, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Line retains the title for now.

Widest Bridge Deck

Accommodating eight lanes of traffic – four going in each direction – this Link has the widest bridge deck in the world.

Highest Speed Limit for a Bridge-Tunnel

Allowing for a maximum speed of 100km/h, the Link allows for much faster travel than similar structures.

Most Advanced Safety Features

The Link has more safety features than any other bridge-tunnel project.

These include monitoring systems, emergency response mechanisms, and construction materials built to withstand whatever natural disasters head their way.

Greatest Reduction in Travel Time

Best of all, the Link boasts the greatest reduction of travel time in the world.

The trip between Shenzhen and Zhongshan now takes less than 30 minutes.

Previously, the trip would have taken around 84 minutes to complete by car.

Knocking 54 minutes off a drive and racking up 10 world records in one swoop is impressive work by any stretch.
