Suzuki wants to keep producing internal combustion engines (ICE) alongside EVs and hybrids for the next 10 years.

This is great news for petrol car lovers, as they won’t have to worry about the next 10 years’ supply of cars.

However, in the future, most cars will be replaced by EVs – because we need to do so if we’re going to save the planet.

Suzuki’s plan isn’t in opposition to that; rather, it wants to see energy consumption reduced across the whole life of a vehicle – from production to the end of the car’s time.

Suzuki sticking with ICE

While many automakers have been shifting from combustion engines to EVs or hybrids, Suzuki has made its stance known.

Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) has advocated a multi-pathway approach to technology for the next 10 years.

This means that the automaker will produce EVs, hybrids, and high-efficient combustion-engine cars for the foreseeable future.

One of these cars will be the iconic Suzuki Cappuccino roadster that is set to make its return soon.

A key part of this strategy will focus on Suzuki’s signature HEARTECT platform.

This lightweight platform has also been used in many of their cars.

They plan to upgrade the platform even further and lose another 100kg from the cars.

“If the vehicle weighs 200 kilograms less, it requires fewer materials, about 20% less energy for production, and 6% less energy for driving. Compact and light-weight cars greatly contribute to the minimization of energy
consumption,” according to a company document.

What are other companies doing?

Other than Suzuki, other Japanese car manufacturers like Mazda, Subaru, and Toyota have also confirmed that they are working on the next generation of combustion engines.

These car makers have also joined hands to create next-gen powertrains that’ll work better with electric motors, batteries, and carbon-neutral fuels.

Toyota has even claimed that its new combustion engine will completely change the game.

On the other hand, companies like Nissan have stopped spending money on new gas-powered engines.
