This YouTuber took a ride inside possibly the strangest car ever made – one that’s shaped like an orange.

You can say a lot of things about the Outspan Orange, but you can’t say it’s false advertising.

These round cars were made to promote a brand of South African oranges in the UK back in the 1970s.

Steph from the YouTube channel idriveaclassic got the chance to get inside one, and orange you glad she did?

It’s often been said that life would be boring if we were all the same.

That much is true of our cars, too.

After all, we can stand and admire a Ferrari or a Lamborghini all day long, but a weirdness factor makes things really interesting.

The Toyota Pod is up there for quirkiness, thanks to its tail and ability to express emotions.

Then there was the six-wheeled Covini C6W, and the aptly named Brubaker Box.

Weird and wonderful cars are all around us.

Well deserving of a spot in that line-up is the Outspan Orange, which might just be the strangest we’ve ever seen.

And yes, this is a car shaped like the fruit.

Steph from the idriveaclassic YouTube channel got to take a look inside one, and it really is remarkable.

Only six of these rotund cars were made between 1972 and 1974, to promote the South African orange company, Outspan.

The cars were seen as a way to win over public approval at a time when South Africa was under a lot of scrutiny, due to its apartheid policies.

For Steph, getting to see this car in the flesh – or would that be the peel? – was a childhood dream come true.

“The vehicles were ridiculous and brilliant in equal measure,” she declared.

Built largely from components of Minis at the time, the Oranges were constructed with two Mini subframes, which were fitted to a short spaceframe chassis.

This gave it a wheelbase of 48 inches, which gives you some idea of how small this vehicle is.

For comparison, a Toyota Yaris has a wheelbase of 100 inches.

To enter this car, you need to enter through a door in the back, and you’re then greeted by a rounded cabin.

Each one of the Outspan Oranges is different in its own way.

The one that Steph looked at is on display at the Beaulieu Motor Museum in England.

But what was it like to drive this fruit on wheels?

“Sometimes it feels like you’re in an Austin Powers remake,” Steph remarked.

“You soon forget that you are in an orange, and you just drive it like a normal vehicle.”

However, it has its limitations – you can’t drive over 30MPH or you’ll tip the vehicle.

That’s one way to get orange juice.
