The new Mazda MX-5 is almost here.

And there’s more good news because it’s almost certainly going to be a hybrid, not an EV.

The Mazda MX-5 is an icon, and it is also the best-selling convertible in the world.

There have been four generations of the MX-5 and Mazda is currently working on the fifth-gen model.

The details are being kept under wraps for now so we don’t know exactly what sort of powertrain it will use.

Then again the MX-5 is a lightweight sports car and therefore doesn’t need a big engine.

This means that Mazda might be able to give it hybrid power, combining a small, high-performance gas engine with an electric motor.

The 2.0-liter engine in the current-gen Mazda MX-5 delivers over 180 hp, giving the car a 0-60 time of just 6.5 seconds.

Mazda could replace this engine with a smaller one and extract perhaps 200+ hp with the addition of an electric unit.

This would give the car great performance figures, while also reducing emissions to comply with emission regulations.

Mazda director Yasuhiro Aoyama said “there will be some kind of electrification”.

However, he also added the company “will not betray our fans’ expectations.”

The all-new, fifth-generation Mazda MX-5 is expected to arrive in 2026.

About the Mazda MX-5

First launched in in 1989, the MX-5 (also known as ‘Miata’) is the best-selling convertible in history with more than 1.1 million units delivered as of January 2022.

Loosely inspired by the Lotus Elan, the MX-5 has always relied on agility rather than sheer power to deliver fun and performance.

The fourth and current generation MX-5 was unveiled in 2014.
