Elon Musk has unveiled the most recent prototype of his humanoid robot, Optimus.

The robot was presented on stage at Tesla’s AI Day in Silicon Valley at the weekend.

When Optimus walked out onto the stage and waved, a cheer erupted from the crowd.

The Tesla bot, which stands at 5’8″ and weighs 125lbs, has been designed to eliminate dangerous, repetitive and boring tasks.

Musk said Tesla planned to produce the robot en masse just like their cars.

“Our goal is to make a useful humanoid robot as quickly as possible,” Musk said.

“And we’ve also designed it using the same discipline that we use in designing the car, which is to design it for manufacturing such that it is possible to make the robot in high volume, at low cost, with high reliability.”

Musk said the robot would hopefully cost less than $20,000 for people to buy.

But he said there was still a lot of work to do to get it across the line.

Tesla has suggested production could start as early as next year and be available in three to five years.

Tesla Optimus

Musk took to Twitter after the event to say “naturally, there will be a catgirl version of our Optimus robot”.

Optimus is clearly quite advanced because it has its own Twitter page already.

“Thank you Elon Musk for creating me,” it said.

“I will be nice to the humans.”

While Optimus didn’t perform any tasks on stage at the AI Day, people were shown a video of it performing simple tasks like watering plants.

The billionaire Tesla CEO described the robot as part of a “fundamental transformation of civilization as we know it”.

Musk has previously warned that artificial intelligence was a threat to society, and assured people his inventions would remain safe.

“We always want to be careful we don’t go down the Terminator path,” he said, referring to the sci-fi film in which robots wage a war against humans.

Yes, Elon, that would be nice.
