$2 million dollar ‘invisible home’ has a special hidden underground garage

Here are two things that are not immediately obvious when you look at this…thing.

First, this is actually a house.

It’s known as the Bigbury Hollow house, or the ‘invisible’ house as most people call it, and it’s easy to see (no pun intended) why.

The second thing that’s not obvious is the house actually has a pretty sizable garage hidden underground.

There’s a flourishing market for unusual houses.

The Joshua Tree house in the middle of the Californian desert that Supercar Blondie’s Sergi Galiano gave us a tour of is a great example.

Then we’ve got luxury bunkers, the Dubai mansion with an underwater garage (!), and – of course – the massive, brutalist house Kanye West once bought, though he’s now reportedly trying to sell it.

Bigbury Hollow is in the same breath, in that it defies convention.

From afar, Bigbury Hollow looks like a hill or a promontory.

Then, as you get closer to it, you realize that the hill actually has a big hole in it.

And then when you get closer still, you realize that the ‘hole’ in question has terraces and a backyard and a swimming pool.

The rest of the house is hidden under the surface, but because of the clever way it was designed, plenty of sunlight gets through so it is kind of surprising how bright it is when you’re inside.

But the real surprise is the underground garage.

It’s big enough for four or five cars – depending on how big they are – and there’s a car lift to bring them up to the surface.

And there’s another thing that’s kind of surprising, and that’s the cost.

In the US, especially in certain states, it seems like you can’t buy anything for less than seven or eight figures these days.

Even Kanye West’s mansion, the one we mentioned, cost him tens of millions even though it still doesn’t have furniture, doors, or even windows.

Building Bigbury Hollow ‘only’ cost Hawkers, the architectural firm that designed it, around £1.6 million excluding the cost of the land.

That’s around $2 million at today’s rate.

We’d say it was worth it.
