Boeing 787 Dreamliner has big secret cabin just for pilots

The 787 Dreamliner is one of the largest airliners in the world.

More importantly, it is designed for long-haul flights that can potentially last almost an entire day.

A lot of people will want to sleep during such a long a trip, including pilots once the plane starts cruising on autopilot.

And Boeing actually thought of that with a secret cabin just for pilots.

Most airliners designed for such long trips are equipped with secret cabins for the crew and the pilots.

Even the 747, the aircraft that preceded the 787, has secret compartments for the crew.

Do pilots get better treatment than the crew?

The first thing people will probably want to know is whether the cabin for the pilots is better when compared to the one used by the crew.

To be fair, they’re both equally cramped, but the pilots’ cabin looks better for a couple of reasons.

The pilots’ cabin (above) appears to be a lot brighter than the one used by the crew on the 747 (below).

These cabins are designed for sleep, but lighting is still an important component when it comes to relaxation.

And then, and this is arguably a more relevant difference, while the pilot’s bed is just as small and narrow as the one the crew use, there’s a lot more headroom.

You don’t have to be a contortionist to fit in it.

The pilots’ cabin is also supposed to be equipped with noise isolation, supposedly, although the two beds are divided by a curtain, so we’re not sure what they mean by that.

And the cabin is quite noisy anyway, just because the plane is loud, providing some sort of permanent white noise.

The future of the 787 Dreamliner

The 787 Dreamliner is one of two airliners (the other one being the 777) designed to replace the 747.

The thing is, the 747 was retired in 2023 but there are still over 700 747s that are still operational.

In terms of delivery numbers, the 787 and 777 aren’t a match for the 747, not even when you combines sales of both airplanes.

And the fact that Airbus is now a serious competitor with the A350 isn’t helping Boeing.
