The vessel transmitted a distress signal after a fire started on one of the ship’s cargo decks.
All 22 crew members on board were successfully evacuated, but the condition of the vehicles on board is not yet known.
YouTuber and car reviewer Matt Farah took to Twitter to confirm his Boxter was on board.
“I ordered a Boxster Spyder in August and I was very excited to get it at the end of this month, and now it seems like it might become an artificial reef,” he said.
The vessel, named Felicity Ace, departed from the port in Emden, Germany on February 10 and was expected to arrive at Davisville, Rhode Island on February 23.
Felicity Ace was built in 2005, and measures 656 feet in length and is 104 feet wide.
It can carry up to 17,738 tons and can be loaded with up to 4,000 vehicles – though it isn’t known how many vehicles were onboard at the time it caught fire.
