Everyone knows Salt Bae (real name Nusret Gökçe), the celebrity chef and restaurateur who became an internet sensation in 2017 after a viral TikTok.
It’s also fair to assume everyone’s heard of his (in)famous 24k gold-crusted tomahawk steak.
The price varies depending on location, season and other factors – but it can cost as much as $2,500.
Since Salt Bae is also a watch collector, I thought it’d be interesting to put together a list of Swiss-made watches that are actually cheaper than his steak.

1. Longines Spirit ($2,150)
Most watch experts agree that Longines is a bit of a sleeper brand that for some reason never gets the same recognition as its competitors.
The Spirit is one of Longines’ best-selling models, an automatic watch designed, in the word of Longines, to “conquer air, land and sea”.
Super accurate automatic movement, water-resistant up to 10 bar (= you can swim in it) and available with different straps and colours of the dial. And it costs $2,150. Still cheaper than the steak.

2. Oris Aquis Date ($1,700)
The Oris Aquis Date is available in several different colourways but I picked the green dial one because green dials are hot at the moment.
It’s made from stainless steel, with a 39.5 mm case and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and powered by Oris’ automatic movement.
This particular Swiss watch ‘only’ costs $1,700, which means you can buy the gold steak or you can buy this and walk away with $800 still in your pocket.

3. TAG Heuer F1 Chronograph ($1,650)
If you’re looking for a Swiss watch with a strong connection to motorsport, TAG Heuer will probably be at the top of your list.
The Carrera was named after the Carrera Panamericana, a border-to-border rally event in the 1950s; then we have the Monaco, you can guess what that is named after, and of course the Formula 1.
First launched in 1986, the F1 is one of TAG Heuer’s best sellers and it still is the entry-level model today.
This particular timepiece is a chronograph with a scratch-proof sapphire crystal and a Gulf-inspired colour theme, combining a blue dial with orange accents and an orange rubber strap.
And it costs $1,650, nearly $1,000 less than the steak.

4. Tissot T-Touch Connect Solar ($1,050)
Tissot is kinda like Longines but at a lower price point and covering a wider spectrum in the market. That’s exactly what the Tissot T-Touch Connect Solar was designed to do.
You could call it a sports watch, and you wouldn’t be wrong. You could also call it a smartwatch and you wouldn’t be wrong either because it is both.
It combines a traditional analogue dial with a digital display, and it is powered by solar energy. Furthermore, it is also shockproof, scratch-proof and waterproof. A great all-rounder.
It retails for $1,050.

5. Hamilton Ventura Quartz (ca $930)
Hamilton was founded in 1892 in Pennsylvania but the brand became Swiss in the 1960s, when the company relocated to the small town of Büren near the capital Bern.
They have been part of the Swatch Group since 1974 and they still make the Ventura, arguably the company’s most famous model because Elvis Presley used to own one.
There are several different models but this is the one that most people may recognise, chiefly because it was featured in Men in Black I, II and IV.
It costs 875 Swiss Francs, that’s about $930. You can basically buy nearly three of these instead of a steak
