This couple bought an abandoned catamaran that sank during a hurricane, before realizing how much work it would need.
The 44-foot boat had sustained a lot of damage – its mast was unusable, there was leakage and the engine was missing.
What may have looked like a lost cause to others, however, looked like an opportunity to this couple, who share their adventures on YouTube.
But would they be able to give the boat its second wind or would they end up going down with the ship?

The catamaran that had been through a lot
The couple behind YouTube channel Sail Life – Mads and Ava – claimed they weren’t ‘money rich,’ but they were ‘rich in junk’.
And by that, we mean they’d inherited a lot of junk thanks to them acquiring the boat.

We’re talking furniture, tools and multiple bottles of water.
It’s not an unfamiliar sight for us to see stories about people trying to resurrect abandoned yachts.
One family managed to revive one in 16 months, while this couple managed to turn a barnacle filled vessel around in five.
But would this pair have the same success?
Let’s first quickly look at the boat’s history.
The catamaran was sunk by Hurricane Dorian, which hit the Bahamas back in 2019.
A boat was knocked on top of it and it sunk beneath the waves, where water made its way into the cabin.

What was left behind was a ‘giant, wet, soaking mess of nastiness’, as Mads put it.
The boat was towed from the Bahamas to Florida, where she was placed in a salvage yard.
And that’s where it remained until Mads and Ava found it.
As you might expect, there were ‘hundreds of projects’ on their massive to-do list.
“I’ve decided the first big milestone we’re working towards is getting the boat back in the water in a state where it can maneuver under its own power,” Mads said.
Getting the boat back out on the water after a hurricane
Meeting this goal would be no small feat, however.
For a start, the Floridian heat was enough to deter Mads.
“It keeps sounding like a rerun of Game Of Thrones.

“Winter is coming. It sounds like living in Florida is three months of Hell, followed by nine months of Heaven”, he said.
Heat or no heat, there was a lot that would need to be done in the meantime.
The engine needed installing and the water tanks had to be repaired.
Fortunately, the couple had made some gains by the end of the video.
They’d successfully repaired the ramp and applied an outer coat of paint to it.
Even the area around the boat had been cleaned up, which made for a more organized space to work in.

There was a lot yet to do with this catamaran, but here’s hoping they’ll be breathing in sea air in no time.
As you’ve seen, it’s no easy feat to do up a boat, as this couple found out when they scraped the paint off the bottom of their boat.
