De Tomaso concept car celebrates the last decade of the combustion engine

This is a V12 glory machine designed to celebrate the last decade of the combustion engine. 

De Tomaso designer Jowyn Wong took inspiration from Ferraris of old and the Lotus Exige when he designed this V12 supercar concept.

De Tomaso, a brand known for merging American performance with Italian design, is currently also reinventing itself with the upcoming P72, which is being built at the Nurburgring. 

And as the name suggests, only 72 examples will be built.

The emerald green neo-retro design features bold gold trimming on the rims and side flanks. 

It’s got a massive air intake at the front, huge headlights, and a curved windshield that looks like the cockpit of a spaceship. 

On the roof, the concept has another air intake inspired by Pagani race cars. 

Meanwhile, at the back, it has elongated rear wheel arches reminiscent of the Porsche 917. 

And one of the most eye-catching features of the design has to be the four massive exhaust pipes, which are also of course, also coated in gold. 

The green continues inside the car, with a plaid textile design paired with textured brown leather. 

When Jowyn Wong took to Instagram to reveal the unnamed concept, he said it drew “obvious inspiration of the 917, Lola T70 and the Ferrari 512 S”. 

“I spent about. week refining the body as I’m quite meticulous about reflections,” he said.

He said he wanted to to celebrate the end of the combustion engine as the auto world moved toward a new greener future. 

“In short, I loved my Lotus Exige so much at the time, it inspired me to create a brand new V12 glory machine to celebrate the last decade of the combustion engine,” he said. 

“Though a lot of things have changed since, then as we put our efforts and focuses more on the planet and the humanity itself in preparation for the 4th revolution of our species.” 

In creating the concept, Wong raved about the ease of design with new tech tools like Gravity Sketch, which he used to create this concept. 

“The capability of gravity sketch never ceases to amaze me, The data transfer is sublime an dlal technical,” he said. 

“I just love the ability to have a full virtual reality studio anywhere in the world.”

He said design had come a long way “ever since we made our first digital supercar way back in 2014, the Apollo arrow,” which was created with the iPad and laptops. 

He said AI (artificial intelligence) would be the next tool he would try “just to see how much human input will actually be required (if any at all)”. 

Wong said he would even like to design using brain-controlled interface to design cars in the future. 

Well, if nothing else, this top designer’s got big dreams.
