A homebuilt V12 engine powered a custom-built streamlined race car to 244 mph.

Have you ever fixed or repaired something and got a unique sense of accomplishment?

Then imagine what Pete Aardema and Kevin Braun — the guys behind the V12 must have felt when their race car hit 244 mph.

The race car also set a new speed record at the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed.

It is even more astonishing since the V12 engine was made by just two dudes in a shop.

How the Homebuilt V12 engine car broke a land speed record

Aardema and Braun built the V12 engine, specifically for breaking land speed records.

With Koenigsegg and Bugatti fighting for a 310 mph speed record and electric cars becoming faster — the automobile industry is filled with the need for speed.

This story is just a testament to Aardema’s and Braun’s hard work.

The duo, renowned for their innovative engineering, crafted a naturally aspirated V12 engine.

The 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 produces 920 horsepower and revs to an amazing 9,500 rpm.

Thanks to such a powerful engine the custom-built streamlined race car driven by Cal Rothe reached a phenomenal speed of 244.5 mph, setting a new speed record at the iconic venue.

Making a new record was not easy

The record-breaking attempt was also the culmination of years of meticulous design and engineering by the duo.

In the video uploaded by Greg Quirin, you can see the car jumping thousands of revs at just half throttle.

With this much power, the car easily breaks traction at the rear wheels and you can see the car squirming when going well past 100 mph.

However, the car settled after it reached 150 mph and Rothe was able to go full throttle.

But the duo is not done yet. They plan to add nitrous in an attempt to hit 259 mph speed.
