Ford GT hit 310mph to become fastest street-legal car in the standing mile

A Ford GT managed to hit a top speed of 500km/h (310mph) on a standing mile – making it the fastest street-legal car to do so. 

The 2006 modified car, nicknamed BADD GT, took part in a runway racing event along the launch and landing facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. 

And it was probably the perfect location for such a feat – as the Ford GT was more than a little bit reminiscent of a rocket as it blasted off along the strip.

The modified Ford GT has 2,700hp

Launched in 2004, the Ford GT had a production run that ended in 2022 with a special limited-edition model – a car with a $1.7 million price tag.

BADD GT is a twin-turbo 2006 model owned and driven by Johnny Bohmer – the man behind the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds runway racing event. 

Bohmer bought the car with the hopes of one day pushing it past the 300mph (482km/h) barrier and has since performed numerous modifications on it. 

BADD GT’s V8 engine is able to produce more than 2,700 horsepower  – for comparison, the stock-standard GT has 550 horsepower and a top speed of 329km/h (205mph).

In 2012, Bohmer – and BADD GT – set the Guinness World Record for the fastest standing mile in a street car when it hit 455.8km/h (283.232mph). 

However, a decade and several modifications later, he took part in a special project sponsored by the TV show Gas Garage Monkey to see if he could beat that record. 

The car’s owner says it can ‘do much more’

It’s fair to say that it was mission accomplished – with the car sailing past 455km/h to hit 500km/h. 

“We’ve been blown away by the capabilities of this car,” said Gas Monkey Garage owner, Richard Rawlings.

“Johnny and I are committed to showing the world the kind of speed that this car can achieve and feel we can create records that will last for years.”

Unfortunately, no independent record-keeping authorities like Guinness World Records were at the event. 

Although the team involved did collect plenty of video evidence that backs up their claims. 

No sooner was he over the finish line, than Bohmer was already looking to the future. 

“We believe the BADD GT can do much more than break the record,” he said.

“In its current configuration, we have another 500-700 horsepower that we can work with to really boost the top speed.”
