This woman has gone viral on TikTok after she noticed that everyone in Montana was driving the same Toyota model.

Kel racked up more than 350,000 views on the video-sharing app when she noticed that there were multiple Rav4s in the parking lot of her local coffee shop.

There’s nothing wrong with having this affordable SUV as your own, but why are they so popular in the Treasure State?

Fortunately, the viewers of Kel’s video were more than happy to provide answers in the comments section.

Why are Toyota Rav4s so popular in Montana?

The United States is a big place full of lots of different types of people – who all have varying preferences when it comes to their cars.

Data has even been collected revealing the most popular car in each state of the US.

The Ford F-150 was a very popular car across the country, dominating in Texas, Nebraska, and yes, Montana.

But it was the reliable Rav4 that came out on top nationwide.

Its strongholds were Oregon, Idaho, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts.

So, while it may not have been the top dog in Montana, it still has a clear presence there, as Kel’s video demonstrated.

“Welcome to your average Montana coffee shop.

“We’ve got a Rav4 in the parking lot, a Rav4 in the parking lot, a Rav4 in the parking lot, and a Rav4 in the parking lot,” she remarked as she moved her camera across a coffee shop parking lot.

We didn’t hit the wrong keys on the keyboard – there really were four Rav4s parked next to each other.

Weird, right?

Almost as unusual as when this New Zealander realized his car was one number apart from the one parked next to it.

So, what gives?

Why is Montana so in love with the Rav4?

A rugged car for rugged terrain?

If you think of Montana, a few things may spring to mind.

Chances are, you’re thinking of mountains, ranchers, and rural landscapes.

Lands in which you need a big ol’ car to get you from place to place.

“Montana drivers prioritize power, capability, and durability,” says Car Soup’s Buyer’s Guide, and we think they’ve nailed it.

While the F-150 is the most popular vehicle in the state, Rav4 is still seen as a solid option.

Given that they retail between $30,245 and $39,950, they’re also a cheaper option.

People in the comments section of Kel’s TikTok video had their own views on why the Toyota SUV was such a common sight in the northwestern state.

“Those RAV4s with the tire on the back never die,” one said.

“Why buy a different car when a Rav4 can do anything you want?” wrote another TikTok user.

“Me (a coffee stand manager) sitting in my Rav4 watching this,” remarked another viewer.

Some people expressed surprise that there were no Subarus in sight, suggesting that these cars used to be the most common vehicles on Montanan roads.

It was also noted that two of the Rav4s in the video had out-of-state license plates – one from South Dakota and Idaho.

“Another thing about Montana is the out of state plates coz people can’t afford to live here anymore, so they come to visit,” Kel joked when somebody pointed that out.

Maybe that goes some way to explaining the abundance of Toyota Rav4s in Montana?

Are visitors from the states where it’s the most popular car constantly popping over for a visit?

With scenic mountain views and great national parks, we can’t say we blame them.
