This car graveyard in New England is home to America’s largest collection of Amphicars that can drive both on the road and on water.

If the truth be told, there’s no shortage of car graveyards across the world.

But a car graveyard full of Amphicars is almost unheard of.

So, what’s the story behind the collection stashed away in the woods?

Taking a deep dive into this collection of Amphicars

We’re all familiar with car graveyards, like this eerie lot in a UK forest, or this peculiar car graveyard at the bottom of an Italian lake.

YouTube channel, Drive Analog, paid a visit to the property in New England.

There they found 47 Amphicars that were rotting away as part of the latest private collection in the country.

If you’re not familiar with the Drive Analog channel, they’re best known for giving strange and abandoned vehicles a new lease of life.

Their videos highlight barn finds and then their restoration process – and this video is no different.

Darren received a call about a few potential contenders, so he drove out to the New England property.

Much to his surprise he found an assortment of odd and old vehicles, as well as what he referred to as ‘the largest collection of Amphicars in the US…. 47 plus a few parts here and there.’

More on the Amphicar Model 770

Just for context, the Amphicar Model 770 is perhaps one of the most famous mass-produced amphibious vehicles.

In all honesty, it was never particularly outstanding as either a boat or a car, however, it is a true collectible.

Produced between 1961 and 1968, 3,878 units were produced of which an estimated 90 percent were shipped to the US.

The interesting thing is that fewer than 500 are believed to have survived and, as we learn from the video, 47 of those are rotting away in the woods in New England.

What we find out in the video

The video only shows two of them in greater detail, though, one of which was apparently used by the owner back in the day and has been stretched out to accommodate all seven of his kids.

In the video, the owner jokes about the teak elements and how the person who added them promised never to work with ‘non-indigenous wood again’.

According to the owner, it has been used extensively, including out on the ocean, whereas the other only has 1,100 miles (1,770km) on the clock.

There are a host of other collectibles in the video, too.

These include a 1964 New Yorker send, an eight-door 1972 Checker airport limousine formerly owned by the US Navy, a Rad Radish Chevrolet 3100, and an Austin-Healey Frogeye Sprite.

There’s also an assortment of buses, RVs, heavy-duty trucks, and dilapidated oldies which, according to the owner, he traveled the country to acquire and knows a lot about each of their history.

Sadly, he hasn’t made any attempt to restore them, but should he ever decide to do so, a fully restored Amphicar can fetch upwards of $100,000 at auction.

Not a bad return considering they were priced between $2,800 and $3,300 when they arrived in the US in ’61.
