A lucky American managed to snap up an 80,000lb excavator for just $7,500 at auction.
To put that in perspective, it’s the same price as eight iPhone 16s.
Although a bit worn, it was still in good condition.
Unfortunately, he found out the hard way why it was likely so cheap.

An auction buy costing the same as eight iPhone 16s
The Youtube creator Waldo bought the excavator at auction.
The excavator in demand was the Liebherr R942HD.
Although it got off to a bit of a rocky start, needing a change of battery, Waldo managed to start it up.
The excavator was cheap
After having a little play about with his new toy, he soon discovered why the machine was so cheap.
Waldo explained that due to their sheer size and weight, it wasn’t just difficult to transport the machines, it was also expensive.
The 3.4 metre wide machine was no mean feat to load on to the truck and even required a permit.
The estimated weight was about 80,000 pounds.
Waldo said he also believed the machines were being sold for such a low price because ‘there simply aren’t that many people who want them’.
Waldo was one of the few people who did need the excavator though.

Waldo said he had a big project ahead of him on his property in New Hampshire, US.
The project? Moving rocks. Big rocks.
But before he could put it to the test, the machine needed some maintenance work done, starting with an oil change.
Waldo also needed to fix a throttle lever and clean parts of the engine.
Once that was done, it was ready to get to work.
There was just one more hurdle, Waldo didn’t have much experience operating an excavator.
And rocks aren’t all that easy to move with no experience.
But for a price of just $7,500, he was prepared to give it a go.
