This man from Massachusetts bought an abandoned Land Rover Discovery II, which was practically at rock bottom — and tried transforming it into a luxury camper for an off-road trip across the country.

What’s more, the SUV in question was popular for being riddled with fatal problems that arise out of nowhere.

So not only did he have to restore it, but he had to take precautions to make sure it wouldn’t break down on the trip.

This process involved quite a few part swaps, modifications, and a pretty makeover.

Converting abandoned Land Rover into a luxury off-road camper

Jackson Kessler from the Captain Crankshaft YouTube channel bought this abandoned Land Rover Discovery II ‘truck’ not so long ago.

He called the SUV a truck, but then again, he wasn’t too far off.

Anyway, this early 2000s Discovery had been sitting under a tree for a long time before Jackson rescued it.

Its situation was sadly similar to the first-ever Land Rover’s adventurous history.

It was also brimming with major problems under the hood, and he had to replace everything from the oxygen sensors to the spark plugs and the camshaft to get it running.

After all, the plan was to convert the SUV into a camper for an off-road trip across the United States.

For context, the older-generation Discovery models had quite the reputation for presenting absurd failures — so everything that could become an issue was basically removed.

Now that the Land Rover was ready to roll, Jackson set to transform it into a camper — which he documented on video.

A comfortable camper for the optimal off-roading experience

To convert the age-old SUV into an off-road camper, he first got rid of both bumpers and threw in some heavy-duty replacements.

Next, he made space for sliding doors and installed a widebody kit to make the Land Rover Discovery fit for off-roading.

That, combined with beefier off-road tires, was certainly enough to give it a mean appearance.

Unlike this cozy-looking Lamborghini Urus transformed into a camper home, the Land Rover looked more raw.

Now, there was only one problem left to tackle — it had to fit three full-sized adults so they could sleep comfortably.

Jackson added a camper roof tent on the top that fits two, and built a custom wooden bed for one that was fitted inside the SUV.

The final thing looked a lot like this Volvo 240 turned into a campervan with a Saab top — but on an entirely different level.

As the video ended, it showed the three friends on an off-road trip — and they looked quite comfortable.
