Henry Cavill has been dropped as Superman and it’s fair to say he’s not happy about it.

The British actor confirmed he would no longer star in the DC film on Instagram today.

The news came as a shock to fans because Cavill only just announced in October that he would in fact be returning as Superman.

Taking it to Instagram, Cavill said “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman”.

The announcement comes after Cavill sat down with filmmaker James Gunn and producer Peter Safran who were just hired as DC Studio’s co-chairman and CEO.

“After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” he said.

“The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that.”

While he will not be returning to the role, he did say it was not the end of Superman.

“Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there,” he said.

“My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards.”

James Gunn also addressed the news, saying Henry Cavill’s departure from the role was necessary because DC was taking the movie in a different direction.

“Our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill,” he said.

Cavill’s announcement prompted an outpouring of support from his fans.

“Still a Superman to us,” one said.

“You are and will always be our Superman and you are, of course so much more. Here’s to the brilliance that lies before you,” another said.

“Hope to catch you in another universe, sir.”
