Hypercar shopping can be a difficult task at the very best of times.

Going hypercar shopping for a car that might not even exist is a different task entirely.

Today, that is the exact challenge one YouTuber set himself.

And the results are pretty unbelievable.

McLaren W1: One of the world’s rarest hypercars?

For those of you that are unfamiliar, allow us to introduce you.

The McLaren W1 is an upcoming hypercar set to be released later this year by McLaren.

Woking’s hybrid hypercar reportedly comes with a 4.0 liter, twin-turbo V8 engine.

It is also reported to be coming with a McLaren F1 E-Motor.

All of this motorized madness adds up to a reported power output of 1,258HP.

The numbers are even more impressive, with a reported top speed of 220MPH.

There is also a reported 0-60 time of just 2.7 seconds.

No wonder the run of 399 units is already selling out everywhere.

UK YouTuber goes on hypercar hunt for McLaren W1

All of those glorious numbers and rumors bring us to today’s story.

Mark McCann, a UK YouTuber, was shopping for a hypercar to buy.

In particular, he happened to be shopping for the much-coveted McLaren W1.

There’s just one small problem – he can’t get his hands on one anywhere.

Mark starts his video by explaining the increasingly common problem of scammers offering allocations.

Essentially, the safest way to try and secure an order is by going through McLaren itself.

Mark received a phone call from a McLaren employee, who told him he might be able to get him on the list.

Naturally, Mark was ecstatic at the news that he might be able to buy a McLaren W1 direct.

Hypercar hunting is more difficult than it looks

Having never purchased a hypercar, Mark explains that buying one is much harder than it looks.

He went on to say that he’s narrowed his list down to four cars that he will search for.

The first car he goes to look at is the legendary Porsche 918.

Interestingly, he notes that the price is listed as ‘POA’ – which stands for ‘Price on Application.’

Really, it means – ‘if you have to ask…’

It also means that dealers and sellers can change the price according to interest and market demand.

Sadly, Mark wasn’t allowed to test drive the 918, so it’s back to the drawing board.

The next car he looks at is the phenomenal Bugatti Veyron.

However, there’s a lot of downside for Mark, such as the Veyron being far out of warranty.

Mark heads to… a department store?

Mark then headed to Harrods, maybe the most famous department store in the world.

It turns out that, among the handbags and jewelry, they also sell supercars.

The third car on the list is the Pagani Huayra.

As stunning as the Huayra is, the Pagani is well out of Mark’s price range.

And that brings us to the final car – the McLaren P1.

For the YouTuber, the car ticks the box of owning one of the ‘Holy Trinity,’ as well as owning a hypercar.

It also turns out that the running costs are more realistic and reasonable than the others.

The YouTuber’s last concern is the potential for return on investment in owning one.

Mark’s friend, Carl, explains that, at $1.5 million, it’s a third of the cost of most hypercars.

He then found some answers as to why hypercar shopping was so difficult.

With the costs involved, some dealerships don’t actually own the cars that they sell.

Mark ended his video by concluding that he will have either ordered the W1, or bought his own hypercar.

We cannot wait to see what decision he’s made.
