The new Lotus Emeya is here to solve the biggest issue with EVs

This is the new Lotus Emeya, a four-door coupe that’s faster than (nearly) anything else on the road at the moment.

Lotus calls it a hyper-GT, a hybrid between an SUV and a coupe.

And more importantly, the Emeya fixes the main issue with EVs.

Most electric cars share the common issue of slow charging times because charging them takes way longer than it takes to fill up the tank of a gas car.

That’s not a problem with the Emeya because, thanks to its DC fast charger, five minutes is all it takes to get from 0 to 93 miles of range.

And this doesn’t really affect performance, either, because the Emeya delivers over 900 horsepower, which gives it a 0-60 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.8 seconds.

Meanwhile, the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).

The interior is unique.

For starters, it does not rely on the ultra-minimalistic design language that most brands adopt.

The center console is not as barren as it is in other cars, there’s a funky yellow LED light that runs across the dashboard and look at those seat belts.

They’re white, with black and gold stripes, because why not.

Also, you get the usual infotainment screen in the middle of the dashboard, and a massive 55-inch augmented reality head-up display.

Is the Emeya a ‘REAL’ Lotus?

The entire auto industry is switching to full electric but the transition is harder for some brands, not from a technical standpoint but due to their perceived identity.

Lotus cars were known for being a little rough around the edges and uncompromising.

The company’s founder Colin Chapman once famously said you need to “simplify, and then add lightness” when building a Lotus.

That option is no longer available in the current market, and in order to retain its identity, Lotus is focusing on a few things.

First, the Emeya, like (almost) every other Lotus car before it, has a feminine name that starts with the letter ‘E’.

The tradition identifies Lotus as a brand, and it started with the Elise, which was named after the niece of the then-owner of the company.

Second, the Emeya sports the same electric, vivid shade of yellow as the Eletre SUV or the Evija hypercar or even the aforementioned Lotus Elise.

And then third, and most important of all, the Lotus Emeya is above all else a performance car.

So all in all, the Emeya looks and feels nothing like the brand’s cars of old, but it’s still 100 percent a Lotus.

Lotus Emeya pricing and availability

Production is set to start in late 2024, and we can expect a price tag in the region of $100,000.

The base model, Emeya S, will have a range of 300+ miles (480+ km), while the range-topping variant will be offered with a range of 370+ miles – or 600 kilometers.
