In an on-the-nose move, Disney+ has dropped the new trailer for the much-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series on none other than May the 4th.
And even though it’s packed with glimpses of what’s in store for the beloved Star Wars character that’s the namesake of this series, it’s the last several seconds of the trailer that gave me goosebumps: the heavy breathing of the franchise’s most famous villain, Darth Vader AKA Anakin Skywalker.
Before the reveal, a robotic arm appears and pushes a familiar component onto a chest plate, and as it powers up the iconic sound can be heard as a shadowed Kenobi opens his eyes in a moment of recognition.

The trailer then ends with the title card and declaring the series will be streaming from May 27.
But let’s go back and break down other parts of the trailer that also stood out to this passive Star Wars fan (not an original take, but I am a devotee to Episode IV to VI, they’re my rainy day movies).
The Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer begins with the voice of Ewan McGregor who returns as the title character saying, “They’re coming, stay hidden or we will not survive”, as storm troopers march on rain-soaked street at night and three villainous figures walk towards the camera.
The ominous music crescendos as Kenobi spots what is presumably a young Luke Skywalker through a pair of binoculars.

Skywalker’s guardian Owen Lars (Joel Edgerton) then appears onscreen, telling Kenobi to: “Leave us alone.”
To which the Jedi responds: “When the time come, he must be trained.”
And in a cutting clapback, Lars replied: “Like you trained his father?”
Kenobi looks away unsure how to respond… because we all know how that ended.
“You still want Kenobi,” a gravelly voice then declares as Empire allies make their appearance and Kenobi returns for another cameo, this time riding across the desert.
The trailer confirms it will be a six-part series as Moses Ingram’s Reva declares: “I want every low life and bounty hunter to squeeze him”. “Him” being Kenobi it seems.
Then comedian-turned-Eternal Kumail Nanjiani (who I’m very proud to see in another blockbuster franchise, snaps to him) shows up and we get no other confirmation about his role in the series other than that he’s in it. But he appears to be wearing Jedi robes.
And as the music crescendos again, you then see Reva yelling out to a runaway: “You can’t escape him.”
We’re not 100 percent sure who this “him” is, but this is the moment we get our first glimpse of Vader, so perhaps she’s referring to him.
Though Disney is playing this close to their chest, I’m no doubt intrigued by what the Obi-Wan Kenobi series has in store for us, and I really hope it’s a good one.
