Tesla fan takes a measuring tape to the Cybertruck’s rear bumper and finds surprising results

Despite all the pictures and videos surfacing online of the Tesla Cybertruck, there’s still so much that’s unknown about the hotly-anticipated EV.
For example, some of the key dimensions of the all-electric pickup truck remain a mystery.
That was until one Tesla fan took a measuring tape to the Cybertruck’s rear – and the results are surprising to say the least.

In late 2019 when the Tesla Cybertruck was unveiled, there were legitimate concerns that it’d be too large for conventional garages.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk was quick to quash those concerns, though, saying that the Cybertruck’s size had been reduced slightly so it could fit in a standard garage easily.
Despite saying this, the actual dimensions have never been released.
It soon became a running joke of sorts among Tesla enthusiasts that someone should just take a measuring tape to a Cybertruck release candidate when they spot one.
That’s easier said than done, of course, but as per a recent post on the Cybertruck Owners Club, a Cybertruck reservation holder actually did it.
They were only able to measure the width of the Cybertruck’s bed and the rear bumper, but the findings are interesting nonetheless.
Apparently, the width of the rear bumper was 72 inches, with the width of the actual vehicle from the rear 78 inches, which isn’t too far off the Model S and Model X.

The Model S and Model X are listed with a width of 78.2 inches and 78.7 inches, respectively.
According to a Cars.com report, the Cybertruck’s original prototype from 2019 was also roughly measured at 79.8 inches wide.
So Musk was telling the truth when he said the size of the Tesla Cybertruck had been reduced slightly – 1.8 inches to be precise.
However, it should be noted that the Cybertruck’s sides aren’t necessarily flat.

Essentially, he’s saying my width measurement is incorrect and he predicts 80” (and speculated it could be as narrow as 78” or less).

Longtime Tesla investor Matthew Donegan-Ryan noted that the Cybertruck had a full width of 84 inches, with the fender flares of the all-electric pickup truck notably thick and wide.
Apparently, the fender flares stick out three inches, so the Cybertruck’s main body could indeed be around 78 inches wide.
A width of 87 inches without its fender flares would make the Cybertruck slightly narrower than other pickup trucks.
Take the Rivian R1T, which is 81.8 inches wide with its mirrors folders, or the Ford F-150 Lightning which is 80 inches without its side mirrors.
That being said, neither the R1T nor the Lightning have fender flares like the Tesla Cybertruck.
